Do I need an architect?

Dear Expert: Why should I consider using an architect?

A: By law, people are not required to use an architect for residences. Sometimes using an architect is perceived as a luxury. However, working with an architect is an investment, not an added cost. His or her designs can capture energy savings, can improve efficiency and functionality, and can add market value to your property because good design sells.

Architectural Assessments

Dear Expert: How do I select an architect?
 
A: There’s a lot that goes into this—take the time to be thorough. Start your research online at aia-mn.org. Use the “Working with An Architect” publications and the Firm Directory for starters. Firms listed in the directory are AIA Minnesota licensed architects, which assures they have an architectural degree, completed a three-year internship, and have taken a series of exams. Look to find an architect whose personality and design approach work with your ideals. Also ask about his or her process, fees, and budget.

Big Decisions in a Bad Economy

Dear Expert: How do I evaluate whether to renovate or build new in the current economy?
 
A: It’s stressful as a homeowner to evaluate all of your options without the help of an expert. Architects can make a great sounding board—share your ideas with them, take them to look at a new property, and show them your existing home. This is such an important piece of the process to get right. Once decided, you can feel confident going forward that you made an informed choice.

Sustainable Choices

Dear Expert: I want to make sustainable choices in my new home design. Is it expensive?
 
A: The current economic crisis presents an opportunity to build better, more sustainable homes. AIA is calling for the federal government to provide $30 billion for a plan that includes energy efficiency upgrades for residential construction and green affordable housing. If incentives and tax deductions are available to homeowners, green will be that much more attractive.

Matrimonial Design Clash

Dear Expert: My husband’s ideas and my ideas for our new home vary quite a bit. How do we agree on a design?

A: There seems to be a misconception that you have to choose a style or type of home and stick with it.  Architects can help homeowners focus on priorities, balance their choices in materials and design to keep it affordable, and think in new and different ways. A traditional farmhouse can have a contemporary feel, for example. Architects are experts in melding styles and ideas to create a cohesive, unique home that all can enjoy.
