Ready, Set, Shop

I just came from International Market Square, where I got a preview of the offerings in the annual ASID Great Finds Designer Home Furnishings Sample Sale. I couldn’t believe some of the price tags I spotted—this Century raw silk sofa (regularly $5,860) for $1,995 and the aged eglomise cocktail table is $1,475 (regularly $3,750). And plenty more—prices on designer furniture, home accents, and décor items are 50 to 80 percent off... Read more »

Candy Land

Just the thing for that post-Halloween sugar crash: the new south Minneapolis sweets shop, Sugar Sugar Candy. Owner Joni Wheeler, whose work as an expert gift-package wrapper you’ll see in the next issue of Midwest Home (on the newsstand Nov. 12th), is stocking a candy connoisseur’s dream of boutique confections. There’s something for every taste (as long as it’s sweet), from retro to contemporary: Bit-O-Honey, absinthe cordials, organic jelly beans, Satellite Wafers, chocolate mustaches, fresh marshmallows from local maker Susan Dietrich of Very Prairie. Check it out at 3803 Grand Ave. S., Tuesday-Saturday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday 12 to 5 p.m.

Smart, Personalized Letter Art at Epitome

Epitome in the Galleria offers an immediate, personalized service that we adore: photo art that spells out a name or a word. The photos available are of “found” letters: a “C” that's really a folded leaf; a “P” that's really the crook of a wrought iron banister.

Slip them into the slotted frame, and voilá! You have a custom gift: immediately.

Photos are $7 each; slotted frames range from $40 to $88.

Order at Epitome, 3395 Galleria, 952-920-2978.

More Julia Child Style

One of my favorite product pages of all time is the one featured in the current issue of Midwest Home, with several culinary inspired accents such as body lotion packaged to look like milk, hand soaps formed to look like farm fresh eggs, and a chandelier with dangling spoons instead of crystals. One I didn't get to include—but love anyway—is the "Fusilli" mirror by Read more »

LiLu Interiors Grand Opening—We Were There!

Last week, Midwest Home editor Chris Lee and I jaunted over to International Market Square to take a peek at LiLu Interiors' new digs on the fifth floor, and big congrats to firm principal Lisa Peck, who designed the amazing space. There was such a crush of wellwishers that we didn't get to see much of the space, but we did partake in a little Champagne and chocolate (including custom LiLu-branded morsels from Chocolat Celeste), and got the chance to meet... Daub & Bauble's New Pillar

Yum-yum. Daub & Bauble, the local maker of lotions and hand washes in four signature scents so luscious they just about tempt you into tasting them (my fave is Arriba Cacao & Spice), just introduced candles in the same fragrances. The 6-inch by 2.5-inch pillars, made from a clean-burning, all-natural soy and vegetable blend wax, fit into the same ceramic caddy that holds D&B’s other hand-care products. Find the candles, $12, at Garden of... Read more »

First Monday at the Commodore—We Were There!

Last night, Midwest Home editor in chief Chris Lee and I followed our own advice and attended the First Monday event at the Commodore, hosted by DeeDee Phillips and made possible by a throng of jewelry makers, vintage dealers, visual artists, potters, and even high-end cheese-makers. We chatted it up a bit with Heinz Brummel, one of my favorite local jewelry makers, tried on a few... Read more »

High & Low: Scalloped Porcelain Dinnerware

L'Objet's Aegean White patterned Limoges porcelain dinnerware has an elegant, scalloped design ($30 to $34 per piece, Five Swans in Wayzata). Or, for a similar look without the L'Objet pricetag, look to the "Legend" pattern in white porcelain from Lynn's Loveramics Collection ($59 for a 16-piece... Read more »
