First Reblooming Lacecap Hydrangea

Back in 2003, Bailey Nurseries of Newport, Minnesota hit a gardening grand slam with its 'Endless Summer' mophead hydrangea that blooms on new and new wood, yielding nice, dense poms-poms of florets from May to September. 'Endless Summer' was marketed ad nauseum, but it... Read more »

New Online Boutique & New Jessica Rust!

The word is hygge, pronounced "hoo-ga," which roughly translates from Danish as being a state of mind to savor the little things, and squeeze out joy and satisfaction from even life's tiniest pleasures. It's a lovely idea, though its kind of like naming... Read more »

Scenes from the Green Expo

Another cool product I spotted at the Green Expo is made for those of us who’d rather be digging our toes into warm sand than shoveling snow. It's called Vacation, and promises to be darn hardy for maintaining your indoor flora while you escape winter. Just water houseplants with Vacation-laced water, and they’ll be perfectly happy for more than two weeks without additional watering. This stuff prevents plants from losing moisture through transpiration—i.e., plants more or less hold their breath until you return from the... Read more »

Scenes from the Green Expo: Itoh Peonies for Cheap

As late as 1999, divisions of the 'Bartzella' intersectional (Itoh) peony hybridized by the Wisconsin Master Gardener Roger Anderson were selling for more than $1,000. But starting this spring, the same soft yellow 'Bartzella' (that actually smells kind of lemon-y), will be sold throughout the metro $125-$150, along with three other varities, 'Cora Louise', 'Julia Rose', and 'Kopper Kettle'. What happened? No, it... Read more »

Scenes from the Green Expo: New Hardscape Pattern from Belgard

A new blanket of snow had just fallen on the metro, but last week the Convention Center in downtown Minneapolis was abuzz with talk of greener days ahead. The annual Green Expo, sponsored by the Minnesota Nursery and Landscape Association, finished up on Friday, and Midwest Home editor Chris Lee and I took a little detour to sleuth out the most interesting new products for 2009. One of the first things to catch my eye was the new Mega-Laffit pattern from Belgard Hardscapes, out of... Read more »

Scenes from the Green Expo: Lilies for your Desk!

At the Gardenworld booth at the Green Expo last week, I got the chance to inspect the new dwarf-sized "Lily Looks" Asiatic lilies—the ones introduced to much fanfare at the 2007 OFA (one of the big-deal floriculture tradeshows, held every year in Ohio). These are really quite the development, because traditional Asiatic lilies make such beautiful cut flowers, and would make lovely potted flowering plants, but they're so TALL. Enter Wetering Potlilium, of Den Hoorn, Holland, who bred this new line of genetically short Asiatics that if Read more »

Etsy Love from MN: Julie Meyer's Super-Chic Dishwashing Gloves

These are the kind of dishwashing gloves that Housework Goddesses wear—all frill and flair, with non of the wear and tear. Minneapolis mom and former graphic designer Julie Meyer got the idea to give standard-bearer dishwashing gloves a diva makeover when she was making oilcloth bibs for her son. Now its her own little cottage industry on Etsy, and a perfect bridal shower gift, when wrapped up with heavenly-scented dish detergent and surface cleaner from local company Read more »
