Etsy Love from MN: William Dohman Birdhouses and Word Signs

A birdhouse can be a retiree’s craft project or something your kid brings home from camp (and forces you to hang in the backyard) … Or it can be as cool and graphic as this design by William Dohman. By day an architectural designer at U+B Architecture & Design in St. Paul, Dohman has turned his graphic design and photography hobbies into a paying gig. His Etsy Shop sells his original photos, graphic design prints, and wooden pieces, including a robot made from reclaimed construction scraps ($45; recycled wood is a... Read more »

A Promising Project

Fact: If half the employed population spends $50 total at three different locally owned shops each month, it would generate $42.6 billion in revenue. Going further, for every $100 spent in locally owned stores $68 goes back to the community (only $43 is returned from spending at a national chain and nothing comes from online shopping). What it all comes down to is dollars and cents, and no one understands this better than local retail consultant and speaker Cinda Baxter. That’s why Baxter has developed The 3/50 Project in March of this... Read more »

Cheers to Tom Gunkelman

I’ve been to several birthday parties this year, but none as memorable as yesterday’s fete for Tom Gunkelman at the Holly Hunt showroom at IMS. Tom—unbelievably—just turned 80 and much of the Minneapolis design community turned out to help him celebrate. Surrounded by friends, associates, and clients eager to toast his talent and give him birthday hugs, the principal of GunkelmanFlesher couldn’t stop smiling—especially at the “Friend of the Dean of Design” buttons sported by many in the crowd. That appellation, awarded to Gunkelman just last week by the Star... Read more »

Perfect for Summer

Summer is here and lucky for us that means warmth, relaxation, and fun. Here are a few amazing items I'm loving this Minnesota summer - they put me in that 'livin easy' mood!

FRUIT INFUSION PITCHER by Prodyne

This pitcher redefines a ‘cool drink.’ When filled with sliced fruit, the pitcher’s infusion rod permeates the liquid within with natural flavor. And in this alluring, clear design, who could say no to a drink? $24.99 through The Afternoon.

New Goose Down Pet Bed from Scandia Down

As the proud "pet parent" of a kitty named Picky-Picky, I'm infinitely susceptible to all kinds of designer goods for my spoiled cat. The Purrounge designed by Elizabeth Paige Smith? Yep, I've got one. The "Tigrito" cat bowl designed by Miriam Mirri for Alessi? Yeah,... Read more »

Garden Lecture Series This Weekend at the Minnetonka Center for the Arts

This weekend, the Minnetonka Center for the Arts is playing host to a garden-themed lecture series that sounds intriguing:

The first one, held from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. this Saturday morning, will feature Elaine Anderson, the owner and founder of Red Tortoise Feng Shui in Plymouth. Anderson will discuss how to add the principles of feng shui (such as energy flow, yin & yang, and use of color) to your garden.

The one that perked my ears was the afternoon lecture, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. featuring the "Archi-Chicks" from SALA Architects (designers/architects Pam Vazquez, Sara... Read more »

Sweatshop Free Sheets & Pillowcases from American Apparel

In the market for sweatshop-free bed sheets? American Apparel, L.A.-based cotton knitwear powerhouse, has apparently expanded into sheets and pillowcases "made from the same fine jersey as our classic tees" boasts one press release I received. Now if we can only get them to expand beyond white and gray.... Buy them at the Uptown American Apparel store in Minneapolis or the Mall of America location. Or, shop online at the American Apparel... Read more »

"Clouds" Design Art at Ligne Roset

I find clouds incredibly inspirational. They have a constant allure regardless of what shape they hold or color they take. Now the beauty and lack of boundaries possessed by clouds can be brought from the sky into my home with an avant garde new tile concept called “Clouds.”

Designed by French brothers and design virtuosos Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, and manufactured by Kvadrat Fabrics out of Denmark, “Clouds” banishes the idea that tiles must be flat, rigid, and rectangular in shape. The squishy, padded, multi-sided... Read more »
