Remodel Like a Pro (Wisdom from Mary Jane Pappas)

Mary Jane Pappas, one of the fixtures in Minnesota's interior design community, does a nice, condensed presentation on fundamentals of remodeling. The Pappas office was generous enough to let me share the points with you.

TRAIN YOUR HOUSE (don't let your house train you) By Mary Jane Pappas

1. Plan your interior design before you begin. A space plan defines where everything goes—how the spaces works, how people move through the space. Name your decisions, right up front and early, about products and finishes. Creating plans before you begin protects your investment and allows you to be in control of both the design and the budget.

Scando Style from Sina Pearson

Made from irregular slub cotton yards or heavy linen with a polished satin weave, the just-introduced "Scandinavia 101" upholstery collection from Sina Pearson Textiles evokes the designers extensive travels in ice country, her own snapshots of Sweden dotted with iron ore red, gold, soft blue, and gray colors, and her private collection of vegetable-dyed yarns and folk textiles. I got a big package of samples of this collection in the mail, and was particularly fond... Read more »

Jones Design Build Breakfast Room

So often, the informal dining area of houses I've toured look to be such afterthoughts—shoved to the side of the kitchen, or confined to barstools at a tall island.  But this family, in the Kenwood neighborhood of Minneapolis, got something different and unique. While revamping and remodeling the family's kitchen, Jones Design Build of Shorewood added this light-infused dining nook, surrounded by bands of clerestory windows, and vaulted up like an orangery. What a lovely spot for coffee and muffins with the... Read more »

Lucky Fireplace Facelift Winners!

I know exactly where I’d add a fireplace in my house: the eastern wall of my bedroom. No matter how many times I’ve wished for a fireplace, however, the wall is still blank. Lynda and Steve Meland from Plymouth have had better luck.

The happy couple is feeling the heat after winning the 2009 Fireside Hearth and Home Fireplace Facelift Contest. The annual contest awards a Minnesota homeowner either a fireplace where one didn’t exist before or an upgrade to an existing fireplace. This year, the Melands won a new fireplace for their drafty living room, and the Maple... Read more »

Paul Villinski Art at the Aulik Luxury Home

I'll admit it--my job is all about voyeurism. Particularly during Luxury Home Tour time, when I get to pre-tour most of the $million-dollar-plus homes and run my hands over the granite countertops, inspect soaring natural stone fireplaces, and roll around on custom, hand-tufted rugs. (Okay, maybe not that last thing...).

By far, my most favorite thing on the tour this year is the Beer Can Butterfly Wall... It's a custom art installation by Long Island artist Paul Villinski,... Read more »

Tour de Luxury '09

Lucky me! I’ve spent the last week getting sneak peeks of the multi-million-dollar custom homes on this year’s Twin Cities Luxury Home Tour. The tour kicks off Friday at noon, so the builders and interior designers are primping the spaces for the opening. But they took a break to give me a preview, showing me so many awesome spaces and cool features, I’ve come down with a serious case of kitchen/bath/closet /porch envy.

A few highlights: Two homes (#10, Stonewood in Minnetonka, and #14, Pillar Homes in... Read more »

New MN Docomomo Chapter Launching Thurs

A new Minnesota chapter of Docomomo, an international organization dedicated to documenting and preserving architecture from the mid-century modern movement, is launching this Thursday at Design Within Reach in Minneapolis. Five women—a historian, an architect, a painter, and two professors— are behind the new chapter, and hope the interest is HUGE. "We'd love to do a happy hour, maybe a meet-and-greet at Spinario Design, a modern home tour, lots of different events," says Beth Bowman, a painter... Read more »

Floor Samples at Traditions

Traditions is hosting quite the sample sale this month and next (sale officially closes the last day in July), with 40 to 70 percent markdowns on casegoods, upholstery, accents and more in both locations. (Almost everything in the place has a 'sale' tag on it.) Jessica Akin over at Traditions was kind enough to snap a few pics of pieces on sale at the Minneapolis shop, including this floral-upholstered Vanguard armchair (was $1,738, now $699!); this spring green loveseat from Read more »

Cool Pet Photography by Sarah Beth

My beloved cats' inexplicable ability to shred apart every piece of furniture introduced into my home has led me to believe pets and interior design mix like oil and water. Now, thanks to Sarah Beth Photography, I can't stop thinking about how well their furry little faces would blend with my living room's motif. Twin Cities award winning photographer Sarah Ernhart, more commonly known as Sarah Beth in her studio Sarah Beth Photography in St. Paul, shows how our slobbery best friends (who won't stay out of the garbage) could be the zesty kick our home's design is...
