Beach Effect
Natural vistas set the scene for this Minnesota GreenStar home
Tucked into a graceful curve in Wayzata, this Dutch colonial-style residence would be right at home in New England, maybe even seaside in Nantucket. The surrounding wetlands reinforce the waterfront feel, as does the home’s cedar-shake and fieldstone exterior.
Nearly every room boasts a stunning view, a deliberate consideration in the overall design. “We wanted an unobstructed view in both directions,” says K.C. Chermak, president and owner of Pillar Homes Partner, Inc. The home is a Minnesota GreenStar pilot project, a regional standard for green home building established in 2007 through the joint efforts of the Builders Association of the Twin Cities, the Green Institute, and the National Association of the Remodeling Industry-Minnesota. This home’s eco-friendly features include floors made of eucalyptus wood (a fast-growing, therefore renewable, species), zero-Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) paint and finishes, dual-flush toilets, and geothermal heating and cooling.
Built for an active family of five, the four-bedroom, five-bath home has 7,300 square feet and boasts something special for everyone—from the dozen cubbies in the mudroom’s hardworking mail center to the sport court on the lower level. The home’s entertaining and private spaces include an elegant owners’ suite sitting room, a spacious office, a comfy sun porch off the kitchen, dual garages (a single and a double), and a backyard pool. —C.L.
