Relaxed Glamour
Elegantly wrought details give this Wayzata home livable luxury
This low profile, Prairie-influenced home sits back from the road, allowing the circle drive and full-grown white pines along its flanks to create a reserved first impression. Once you step inside the 5,500-square-foot home, however, it’s another story: There’s literally a “wow” around every corner. Steve Kleineman, principal of SKD Architects, and Dan Mulrennan, head of MS&I Building Co. outdid themselves with ingenious touches and elegant materials in each room.
Located one lot from Lake Minnetonka’s Wayzata Bay, the house was an “infill” project replacing an aged rambler. Now, the lovely 100-foot-deep backyard is the perfect setting for the covered terrace, patio, waterfall, swimming pool, and children’s playhouse. The main-level entertaining spaces flow smoothly from living and dining rooms to the gourmet kitchen and hearth room to outdoor amenities. A study off the living room and graceful owners’ suite round out this floor, while bedrooms for the homeowners’ teenaged daughter and college-aged son, each with its own bath, are on the lower level. The rest of the lower level is all about entertainment, with a stylish bar to serve guests enjoying the media/billiards room or the pool. The inviting ambiance throughout reflects the homeowners’ desire for gracious living and unpretentious style. —C.L.
