Great Curves
Overlooking Lake Minnetonka, this shapely custom home brims with personality
Above: There’s nothing box-like about this design: Inspired by a circular house John Kraemer & Sons designed for a family in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, this natural stone and stucco home is as curvy as it is scenic. The pool overlooking Lake Minnetonka is complemented by a petite poolhouse and a cedar-surrounded outdoor shower.

Crafted by the Builders’ Association of the Twin Cities’ 2009 Builder of Year, this curvy natural stone house has an incredible, panoramic view of Lake Minnetonka’s Wayzata Bay. Almost every room in this 9,000-square-foot home takes that scenic prospect into consideration, including the lower-level family room. Each space is distinguished by top-of-the-line moldings, unique ceilings, and wood accents. The kitchen has two substantial islands—one is stepped and angled and seats up to eight; the other is smaller and lines up with the commercial grade range and custom-carved alder hood.
Built for a middle-aged couple with two children, this five-bedroom, eight-bath house has plenty of family-friendly amenities, such as a spacious pool with an outdoor shower, a kids’ study nook, and a separate drive so the family snowmobilers can drive out of the garage and onto the lake. At the same time, this house will accommodate the family for years to come, with its extra-wide hallways and doorways, and its own working elevator. “This is a house exactly custom built for this family, even as they get older,” says Kraemer.
