Family Function
An Edina couple rebuilds to accommodate its busy lifestyle
It’s the kind of neighborhood where kids still gather to play kick the can or capture the flag until their parents call them home at night. The school is nearby, and the backyards that meet one another lead to lasting friendships. It’s the kind of neighborhood John Mrachek and his wife, Kirsten, didn’t want to leave, so when they found themselves outgrowing their home, they decided to rebuild on the same lot to better accommodate their family of five.
The Mracheks worked with John Kraemer & Sons to create their 7,000-square-foot home in Edina. With three children ages 10, 8, and 5, the combination of functionality and style was key. “We wanted family space, entertainment areas, spots to retreat to, and a connection to the outside,” Mrachek says.
The kitchen is the focal point of most family homes and the Mracheks’ is enhanced with an adjacent pass-through “butler” area and a small office, or “command center,” where Kirsten keeps the family’s paperwork organized. Also helpful for keeping order, a coat room with cubbies and hooks offers a convenient spot for the children to stow their coats and backpacks, and also for Mom and Dad to leave their cell phones and keys.
The spacious great room, which looks out on the raised stone patio, is another highlight, with its light stone fireplace, dark wood floors, and tall ceilings.
“We really love this home,” Mrachek says. “It captures our personalities and our lifestyle remarkably well.”

- This airy sun room was the keystone to the new home’s design.
- Bold floral patterns brighten the main floor powder room and girls’ bath.
- On the second level, the master suite features a dressing room and large closet (with built-ins and shoe rack) and an elegant bath.
- The home may not look outsized from the exterior, but it contains an ample 7,000square feet.
-
The kitchen features a custom stone hood and enameled woodwork, as well as high-end Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances.

Curious what they think they are teaching all of these neighborhood kids by building a 7000 square foot home. This is a classic example of "just because you can, doesn't mean you should".
