This handsome home offers entertainment options inside and out
Cottage meets traditional in grand style in this home. Set on a 2-acre wooded lot in Inver Grove Heights, the exterior says Minnesota lodge in muted colors of gray, maroon, and cream. Cedar bracket accents and stone complete the look.
On the inside, handsome yet graceful detailing is found in every functional inch of this 6,000-square-foot, five-bedroom, five-bath home. “Despite its size and high ceilings, the home doesn’t feel overly large,” says Kristen Schammel of Highmark Builders. “It really feels homey, with all the contrasts in colors, textures, and depth of [the finishes].” Granite and quartz countertops in shades of browns, grays, and other neutrals add interest.
The flowing main level has gathering spaces galore: great room, hearth room, and three-season porch, each featuring fireplaces with unique stone surrounds. Dark hickory flooring and Shaker-style, coffee-stained birch cabinetry throughout reinforces the lodge feel. So do the dark-stained poplar beams on the main- and lower-level ceilings. A stunning 10-foot-high tray ceiling adds drama to a Zen-like owners’ suite on the main level, where variations in wall colors, wall covering, and tiling tickle the senses.
Thoughtful details abound: For example, the laundry room off the mud room features a drop-down drying rack. Nested between the kitchen and formal dining room, a custom mirror in the charming butler’s pantry is etched with the family name and “Est. 2013.”
In the lower level, the home theater with projection-screen technology and a 100-inch TV will be a hit on movie nights. After a swim in the pool, guests can step into the sunken rec area and snack at the deluxe wet bar or play cards or billards. Or, they can take the exterior stairs to grab a drink in the beverage center off the kitchen and even shower in the pool bathroom before relaxing on the three-season porch.
