> Kitchen and bathroom remodel
Like many homes of its vintage, this 1917 Craftsman had a cramped kitchen about the size of a modern full-size bathroom. The home, in Minneapolis’ Linden Hills neighborhood, also had a 40-year-old den addition that lacked heat and insulation.
The owners worked with SALA Architects’ Deb Kees, AIA, to come up with a new plan: remodeling the den into a new kitchen, and transforming the old kitchen into a main-floor full bathroom. SALA did the initial design work; Highmark Builders, Inc. completed the drafting and installation.
The den and adjacent hallway became a kitchen with mudroom entry area, preserving original features like a double-glass-door entry to the dining room. Using space well with plentiful cabinetry, the kitchen meets another important requirement: the island work area looks out through a screen porch to the backyard.
