> Multi-room remodel

This home boasts an ideal location overlooking Minnehaha Creek in south Minneapolis. But its peculiar 50-year-old log-cabin family room addition clashed with its 1920s heritage. Another malady: its closet-sized kitchen.“It was like you had a nice-sized home with an afterthought of a kitchen,” says David Fey, president of Fey Construction.

Improvements were in order. Fey, with architect Lee Meyer, bumped out the west wall of the home, creating space for a new state-of-the-art kitchen and freeing up the old kitchen for a powder room. A beautiful half-octagon dinette overlooking the creek through Marvin windows was added adjacent to the kitchen. And the family room was rescued from its discordant theme to become a cozy, timeless space. The kitchen addition allowed a complete remodel of the master suite upstairs.

“(The owners) bought the house knowing it that it would be remodeled,” Meyer adds. “They had the resources to do it—and do it right.” Testament to that: this striking transformation earned a 2007 Remodeler of Merit Award.
