The owners of this west Bloomington residence, built in 1990, had clear goals for their home: a new kitchen; new family room; a larger mudroom; and a work/craft area for their children. It wasn’t a matter of extra space—rather, the existing main level needed to be used more effectively.
“We reconfigured the first floor plan of the home to better utilize it for a family of six,” explains Gary Knight of Knight Construction Design, Inc. The project was designed by architect Kurt Baum of Kurt Baum & Associates and executed by Knight.

They renovated the kitchen, opening up the space, adding a 12-foot island, granite countertops, new cabinetry, and a repositioning the work areas. The cabinetry even conceals a secret passageway to a hidden pantry.
The home’s existing screen porch was replaced with a family room, which Knight says now is used “all day, everyday.” The home office was expanded into a kids’ activity room. Here, cabinet compartments and whiteboards for homework assignments and activity schedules keep everything organized for this active family. The mudroom, too, was enlarged, and the whole space was tied together with white oak flooring.

The story doesn’t end there. During construction, Knight had the stuccoed exterior tested and discovered moisture issues. So as the exterior was replaced, it was enhanced with a front porch, new windows, and cedar shingle siding.
Knight’s firm specializes in design creativity, using existing square footage to the fullest before considering an addition. “We accomplished a lot by…moving walls,” he says.

“I like the idea in remodeling of trying to reuse and redesign the existing space.”
