“Oceans of honey oak.” That’s how Plekkenpol Builders Project Manager Erik Mahin summed the kitchen in this 1980s Wayzata home before it was remodeled. The home was finished with spec-home-grade materials. It lacked character and wasn’t up to par with today’s interiors. Its owners envisioned a warm, inviting space with a French country flavor. They were recommended to Plekkenpol Builders, a 37-year veteran of the Twin Cities remodeling scene that specializes in all types of remodeling, from kitchens, bathrooms and lower levels to additions and façade changes.

“Excellent communication and service is what really sets us apart,” Mahin says. “It’s a positive experience for our clients.”

Plekkenpol came up with some clever design solutions and gorgeous woodwork—a significant aesthetic upgrade. The oak cabinetry and inexpensive vinyl floor would be no more.

The remodel brought in all new custom cabinetry with a French country finish and an island with crackle finish. The woodwork included corbels above the cooktop supporting a custom hood, a focal point of the room. “The painters ended up putting a metallic faux paint finish on (the hood),” Mahin explains, “so it almost looks like a weathered copper or bronze.” New lighting is reflected in the golden taupe granite countertops. Red birch flooring completes the kitchen.

In the family room, the built-in entertainment center is big on wow-factor. And the powder room adds class with its Venetian plaster walls, marble-topped vanity, and marble tiled floor.

“It was a pretty amazing transformation from the ’80s look into a more timeless finish with a lot of detail,” Mahin says. “Overall, it’s just a fantastic project.”
