You might say this stunning home on Lake Sylvia near Annandale was never truly finished when built 13 years ago. Crafted with solid walls and half-logs adorning the interior and exterior, large windows, vaulted ceilings, and a loft, it was an idyllic lakeside retreat.

Well, almost. The home lacked a sense of completion—things like a garage, extra bedrooms, and a master suite, explains K.C. Chermak, president/owner of Imagination Renovation, the remodeling side of Pillar Homes: “It was never finished the way it should have been.” That changed recently, when the owners decided it was time to expand. To meet their goals, Pillar planned two separate additions flanking the existing structure, nearly tripling its size.

On one side, a double window became a cased opening entrance leading to a luxurious master suite. A new stairway provided access to the lower level, where the addition includes a bedroom and bathroom for guests, a rec room, and a theater room.

Opposite, the second addition included a new mudroom, laundry room, and a three-car garage with another three-car space underneath. Above the garage are kids’ bunkhouse bonus bedrooms, with dormered ceilings and a “nestled up in trees” feel.

The existing kitchen, too, was moved and then expanded to a spacious, gourmet flavor. “Grandview Lodge was our inspiration for character…to keep the feel of Grandview Lodge and take it to the next level,” Chermak says. Textures and colors from the original home repeat throughout both additions to tie the whole structure together. “It’s a relaxing yet sophisticated new home with a blend of old with new,” he continues. “It blends into the surrounding countryside...it looks like a lodge tastefully placed within the trees.”
