For more than 100 years, this distinctive home had been a stately presence in its Minneapolis neighborhood, blocks from Lake Harriet. Inside, however, it was having an identity crisis. The interior had been remodeled at least twice since 1890, most recently in the early 1980s, leaving décor that was very modern and very white. In Sven Gustafson’s description, the home had a bit of a split personality.

Its new owners wanted to restore its authenticity while adding a 3,500-square-foot addition. The 10-month project came to fruition through Gustafson’s Stonewood Renovation and architect James McNeal of DeNovo Architects.

The home was stripped to the studs and reborn. The great room became a grand foyer. The addition expanded living space in the form of a new kitchen, family room with dinette, and mudroom. Highlights include the curved wall of windows along the dinette, or the mudroom’s triple groin vault ceiling. All of the space upstairs is newly remodeled, including bedrooms, bathrooms, and the master suite on the second level and the nanny suite on the third level.

Nowhere was the home more true to itself than on the exterior: The manufacturer of the dark green, high-gloss clay roof tile made more tiles specifically for this renovation. The home’s 1920s limestone exterior was continued on the addition, cut from the same Minnesota quarry as the original exterior stone—and probably the same part of the quarry, since it had not been quarried for 70 years, Gustafson says.

The home was such a masterpiece it was one of two named 2007 Remodelers ShowcaseSM Dream Home. In this case, a historic, authentic dream-become-reality.
