The story of this St. Paul kitchen is akin to a two-act play.
Act I began in the mid-1980s, when it was remodeled and finished in the white, contemporary style of the time. Then came a 23-year intermission. Now, Act II: A gorgeous eclectic-but-traditional update.
Here’s the plot twist: North Star Kitchens was the design firm behind both remodels.
“The current homeowner liked the way the kitchen was designed for function, but was tired of having a white kitchen and wanted an updated look,” explains Tricia Hauser Tidemann, kitchen designer for North Star Kitchens.
“The layout is great for the way she likes to use the space, and there are a lot of built-in accessories that help her stay organized.”
The kitchen was finished to complement the décor elsewhere in the home—where colorful rooms with white trim and “great artwork and furnishings” are the rule. Most of the new cabinetry and woodwork is a medium-stained cherry. The white island is an exception, to tie it to the built-in cabinetry around the dinette.
One of Hauser Tidemann’s favorite aspects of the kitchen is its new hood. The previous remodel included a structural beam hanging down from the ceiling, but Hauser Tidemann says she wanted to do something more decorative. For visual balance, an additional faux beam was added, connecting to the hood and making it a stronger focal point. “The appliqués on the top of the hood match one of the details on the homeowner’s favorite piece of furniture,” Hauser Tidemann says, “which helped to personalize the space.”
