Lake cabin reborn

A Minnesota lake cabin is a haven of relaxation, inviting you to get comfortable and indulge in the serenity of Up North. This is not a time to be thinking about awkward floor plans—but that was precisely the problem at this longtime family cabin. Its setting was sublime, perched on a peninsula bluff overlooking a lake. Its interior was less attractive. The small, enclosed kitchen was not conducive to entertaining guests. Access to the screened porch was clumsy. The cabin’s owners wanted to preserve its quaint character while bringing a livable floor plan to life. The answer was an extensive remodel that would multiply the cabin’s livability while adding only 73 square feet to its footprint by filling in the corner by the front entry.

The solution started with relocation of the central staircase to an exterior wall, unlocking the space to open up the main floor and center the front entryway. One of two main-floor bedrooms became part of the living area, while the kitchen was enhanced to include island seating.

The upstairs was expanded to include a loft with a curving balcony overlooking the living area. A new roof system accommodated the changes, adding soaring spaciousness to the living area focused around a massive stone fireplace, where new stonework blends seamlessly with the original stones. Remodeling also transformed the cabin’s lower level from damp and musty to comfortable and cozy, with the addition of two bedrooms and a media room.

This is a cabin reborn—it’s true to its Northwoods roots while rising to its true potential as a spectacular lakeside retreat.
