> Great room addition, multi-room remodel
Natural light from the outdoors plays an important role in how people live indoors: bright spaces feel spacious and are thus more pleasant. Sometimes knocking out a wall helps on both fronts.
This late 1950s home on West River Road in St. Paul had an enviable location. But its compartmentalized rooms lacked visual connections—a solution 30-year-veteran-remodeler Enerjac Construction remedied by removing the wall between the kitchen and dining room and adding on a great room. The spacious addition, oriented toward the backyard, floods the interior with natural light under a soaring ceiling. The brand-new kitchen relates perfectly to this connected space, while the adjacent mudroom offers convenient access to the new back deck and patio. The former living room at the front of the home became the new dining room, while the old dining room became a cozy sitting area around the home’s existing fireplace.

“The impact that natural light has on the homeowners is worth everything,” says Tom Christianson, president of Enerjac. “Their mood is just lifted.”
