Perfect space for entertaining poolside

A walkout lower level opening to a swimming pool in the backyard is just the sort of place you’d want to entertain guests. Unless, of course, the lower level is unfinished—as was the case with this Maple Grove home. With an active family that included two teenagers, this space was a surefire remodeling candidate.

“We needed to make sure it was a good entertainment area for family gatherings, friends, and parties,” says Todd Polifka, principal of Vision Remodeling. “We listen to our clients immensely…we make sure to deliver a great remodeling experience, in the process, and in how we design the project.”

In order to open up the space appropriately, Vision had to install a 20-foot steel load-bearing I-beam to carry the weight of the floor above. The new lower level includes a fantastic bar area with seating for five, Cambria countertops, rustic alder-and-glass cabinetry, and a stamped concrete floor.

A drop-soffit ceiling and cultured stone walls make the billiards area more intimate; the drink rail has seating for four. The home entertainment area boasts a fireplace with plasma TV above, nestled into a cultured stone alcove.

A guest bedroom was added to the lower level, and a bathroom ties to both these accommodations and the outdoor pool. Bathroom highlights are an alder furniture-style vanity with concrete sink and a gorgeous tile shower. “The combination of materials were used to deliver great spaces,” Polifka says.

Best of all, the remodeling work was finished in June: just in time to entertain a summer’s worth of poolside gatherings.
