Walking through the upstairs of this cottage on Christmas Lake near Excelsior was like stepping back to the 1960s. The home was built in the 1940s, but had been repaired 20 years later after a tornado took off the roof. The upstairs rooms did not adequately accommodate for the five children who lived here. “The bathrooms were really quite dated and didn’t function for the family,” says Mark Hoiseth, president of Stonehouse, Inc.

Moving walls was key. Former closet space helped expand the bathrooms to a comfortable size. “The homeowner was looking for unique spaces…so we tried to create some fun visual elements as well as functional spaces,” Hoiseth says—evident in an arched bathroom alcove, bumped-out bedroom window seats, vaulted ceilings, and whimsical windows.
The remodel also enhanced the main level owners’ suite, entryway and front door, and stone-cottage exterior.
