This Edina family room needed a remodeling rescue for multiple reasons. It’s previous addition was visually at odds with the rest of the traditional, Normandy-style home and the space was often uncomfortably warm because of tall, south-facing skylights. Plus it had but a single entry with no access to the backyard.
It was transformed as part of a larger remodel by M|A|Peterson that improved several spaces in the home. To start, the family room’s north wall was opened to the kitchen, so both rooms no longer felt compartmentalized. The brick fireplace was redone in stone, centered, and flanked by cherry built-ins. The skylights were replaced with traditional windows. Access to the new patio and outdoor fireplace was achieved through a set of sliding French doors on the south wall.
Now, the kitchen looks into this charming new family room and the backyard beyond.
“We created more comfortable natural light…by reducing the amount of windows and taking the skylights out,” says Colleen Eastman, interior designer for M|A|Peterson. “We used the same footprint, but created a room that feels much larger.”
