Before it was remodeled, the lower level of this 60-year-old Minneapolis home was “a typical Midwestern basement,” says Ranae Frisbie, operations manager for Northrup Remodeling: damp and dark, it lacked the character of the upper levels of the home. Its owners wanted the space to flow with the Arts & Crafts style upstairs while providing places for their family to play with a media area, pool/game room, and workout room.
Northrup connected the lower level’s atmosphere to the main-level living space by recreating the trim detail of the upstairs floors and using the same brick and stone detailing on the fireplace. New windows allow an abundance of natural light and air into the space. Now, the lower level includes a media room with full surround sound, a pool table area with a bar for entertaining, and a workout/play space behind French doors. A three-quarter bath gives the space a sense of independence from the rest of the home.
“The homeowners were delighted with the transformation and enjoy relaxing in their new lower level,” Frisbie says.
