Kitchen remodel, Plymouth

This home presented its owners with two difficulties: One, it had a long kitchen with an awkwardly shaped island and ill-defined space. Two, the owners’ children had chemical sensitivities; they were worried about the health effects of existing finishes.

Otogawa-Anschel Design-Build solved both quandaries. The kitchen was transformed into an intimate, family-friendly space with the deletion of the island and addition of an eat-in bar peninsula and a cozy breakfast nook. The latter helped define the kitchen from adjacent areas. Kitchen finishes include remnant granite countertops, birch cabinetry, and eucalyptus flooring.

To address health concerns, carpeting throughout the home was replaced with a combination of hardwood flooring, slate, tile, cork and rubber, and wool carpeting. Stains in the new space are water-based; paints are low-VOC; and the cabinetry has no added formaldehyde.

“Since this project, everyone has been feeling a lot more healthy,” says Otogawa-Anschel principal Michael Anschel. “That, to me, was an affirmation of using the right materials and getting rid of things that passively create health problems inside the house.”
