This Edina remodel was straightforward in its clean-slate approach: remove the house and begin again. The existing structure, a small 1950s rambler, was lifted off its foundation, intact, and taken away by building movers to be reused.
The home that would replace it, designed by Sharratt Design and built by Stonehearth Custom Homes, also would be a rambler—designed to appeal to empty nesters looking to downsize. “We tried to stay away from oversizing the home,” says Stonehearth Vice President Kris Oothoudt.
Except for a small addition, Stonehearth stayed with the original home’s footprint. Main-level living is achieved with the kitchen, great room, master suite, laundry, and official second bedroom on this floor. The lower level includes two additional bedrooms and a family room with a wet bar. Highlights include black walnut cabinetry, granite countertops, two stone fireplaces, and enameled woodwork and doors. The home will achieve Minnesota GreenStar silver certification, so it has a number of sustainable features, including bamboo flooring, reclaimed tile, zero-VOC finishes, and an Energy Star lighting package. The entire house has a 5+ star Energy Star rating.
