Some remodels build up; but for this south Minneapolis home, the plan was “dig down.” The owners of the 1920s home had considered moving, but had already invested in several previous remodeling projects with Sylvestre Construction. “They loved the location, they just needed a more functional lower level space to entertain,” explains John Sylvestre, president.
The existing basement’s shortcomings were an awkward layout and a 6-foot 8-inch ceiling. The site wouldn’t accommodate an addition, so, in a textbook example of remodeler problem-solving creativity, Sylvestre determined the best option: lower the basement floor.

“It’s as difficult as it sounds,” he says. Concrete and dirt were removed by hand as Sylvestre’s crew dug down 18 inches to accommodate a new floor and in-floor heating system. New footings were poured underneath the existing footings in 6-foot sections.
Once the floor and rebuilt stairs were in place, the remodeling crew had a fresh space to mold. The new lower level is geared toward entertaining with a fireplace, bar, foosball table, big-screen TV, and even a place for the owner’s extensive movie collection.
