The family who lives in this traditional Hopkins home enjoys entertaining. But their kitchen functioned poorly for hosting guests and lacked the amenities they desired. Improving the kitchen’s function was a priority, and the owners wanted its style to be consistent with the rest of their home.
The home had existing exterior stairs from the backyard to the lower level, but they were unneeded, so the kitchen expanded into a small addition over this foundation. The expansion immediately improved the kitchen’s capacity for storage and countertop space.
Removing the soffits and relocating the cooktop to the opposite wall created space for a large island with attached table.
Existing plumbing discovered in the soffit—from a previous bath remodel—necessitated a paneled column and beam. The space between the column and the wall serves beautifully as a dual beverage center, with a built-in coffee maker and microwave on the kitchen side and a cooler and liquor storage opposite.

Thanks to an elegant combination of colors and cabinetry details that compliments the owners’ personal tastes while improving functionality, this bright new kitchen is a five-star space.
