The bath is a sanctuary. It should be a place to rejuvenate and pamper oneself. But in this 1950s Minneapolis home, the sole bathroom was barely functioning. It had been remodeled before in what was, according to Backstrom Remodeling owner Bryan Backstrom’s assessment, a sub-par job. The vanity was falling apart, the tile was cracked, the water pressure was too low, and the floor lacked a certain levelness. As one can imagine, the homeowners were ready to upgrade.
Backstrom gutted the bathroom down to the studs “to make sure everything was straight, plumb, and square.” He replaced the plumbing with up-to-date hardware, then restructured and leveled the floor. Next came the upgrades: a new vanity with cherry cabinetry and granite countertop; a new shower-tub combination; sophisticated fixtures, and sleek subway tile on the walls.
Now, everything works properly and the bath is a pleasant space that the owners love.
“The fit and finish, the materials themselves, it’s a night and day difference,” he says. “It’s a huge upgrade.”
