With two boys of the owners’ four children sharing a room on the second floor of this home, a separate bedroom for the older boy was needed. The home also lacked a family room—but did have an attic that was being used for informal storage. Home Restoration Services captured the attic space to create a new family room, bedroom, and formal storage areas.
A challenge arose as the work began: the Home Restoration crew noticed “a significant ‘belly’ in the roof,” says president Greg Schmidt. Using laser and digital levels, the existing rafters were supplemented with new ones for a level, professional finish to the ceiling.
Space tucked behind the knee walls was lined with melamine hardboard to accommodate storage. Cabinetry, window seats, trim, and seamless wainscoting made the “attic” feel homey. The remodel incorporated a number of green features, including closed-cell Heat-Loc® insulation; energy-efficient Marvin windows; use of a recycled door and vintage trim; and low-VOC water-based paints.
“The vintage trim package with Craftsman-era details makes this attic a space coveted by all six family members and guests alike,” Schmidt says.
