2008 Fall Remodelers ShowcaseSM #50; kitchen remodel/master suite addition, Minneapolis

Like many Minneapolis homes built in the 1920s, this home lacked a well-functioning kitchen and a master suite—both priorities for the owners.

The needed main-level space was there, in the form of an existing addition with a large window and overlook to the lower level, so the kitchen expanded into this space. The old kitchen and open space behind it had made for two awkward eating areas; the bright new space allowed the owners to have a great eat-in kitchen that encourages family dinners and entertaining guests.

“The home looks very traditional when you drive up,” says Sean Doyle, project manager for CNS Construction. “As you walk into the kitchen you realize the size of the home nearly doubles with the kitchen being moved into the existing back addition.

“The size of the kitchen makes for great entertaining and get-togethers. The addition of the master suite allows the homeowners to have a space of their own.”

The new master suite was added above the existing addition, giving the owners a retreat and making the home a four-bedroom abode—just the right size for most families.
