2008 Fall Remodelers ShowcaseSM #128, whole-house remodel, Wayzata

This beautiful Colorado mountain-inspired home near Lake Minnetonka was not always so picturesque. It was built as a small cabin in the 1970s, with later garage and kitchen/great room additions. Its current owners found its sunken living room created a floor plan that lacked cohesiveness, while the master bedroom—an open loft above the great room—offered little privacy.

“The house was very dark and dated when we got a hold of it,” recalls Jeff Lindgren, lead designer for Streeter Renovation & Design.

Must-haves were a true master suite, one-level living, and comfortable guest quarters. The resulting remodel dramatically touched nearly every part of the home and reconfigured half the floor plan, including a major addition. The addition was more of a re-do; Streeter removed the kitchen and great room and added a new kitchen, dining room, great room, lower level, and master suite in the same area, arranged into an inviting traffic pattern. A variety of materials, including Australian cypress flooring, Douglas-fir timbers, a walnut island, knotty cherry cabinetry, and the Fond du Lac Chilton stone fireplace, give the space a timelessness and warmth. Furnishings were provided by Great Estate Home & Garden.

Breathtaking views of the home’s wooded backyard abound, including from the new owners’ suite. “The homeowners now have their own little private retreat suite that picks up on the vistas over the backyard space,” Lindgren says.

Two existing bedrooms were converted into a guest suite with its own bath and an egress set of stairs to what the owners call their “frog”—the finished room over the garage that’s a perfect hideaway for visiting grandchildren. The new lower level—the home lacked one before this remodel—adds a walkout entertainment space and a side-entry tuck-under garage.

The entire package is wrapped in stunning curb appeal, which hints at the beauty and warmth that await within.
