Whole-condominium remodel, St. Paul

This elegant home has graced St. Paul’s Summit Avenue since the early 1900s. But it was remodeled into three condominiums in the 1970s, a process that destroyed much of its historical integrity. Dovetail was charged with restoring the first-floor condominium in a project designed by David Heide Design Studio. “We were constantly looking to the remnants of what was there historically, and asking Dovetail to replicate them to further the language of the house,” says project designer David Heide.

One of the foremost challenges was the owners’ request to move the kitchen from a remote wing to the existing dining room—an expansive space with large openings and formal character. The island screens the prep surface from nearby rooms; the new mahogany and painted cabinetry is a perfect match to existing woodwork. Adjacent to the kitchen, Dovetail’s crew discovered the remains of a previously unknown brick-walled room. Meticulously reconstructed and restored, it’s now home to the family room.

“This house looks and feels historic,” says Doug Tanner, who co-owns Dovetail with Nathan Christenson. “Every space has really interesting historical architectural features...but underneath this finish is an entirely modern infrastructure.”
