Spaces that Speak

Robyne led me through her treasures, playing docent as she described her favorite works displayed on walls and artfully arranged on every horizontal surface. Each piece has a carefully cataloged history, and she’s friends with many of the local artists. But more than the provenance of the art, more than the biography of the artist, Robyne passed along her passion for her collection and the gallery she calls home.
I knew, of course, that I would share “The Art of Being Robyne Robinson” with you. Minneapolis writer Wendy Lubovich, a Walker Art Center docent, takes you on a tour of Robyne’s home and the eclectic artworks that make it uniquely her own.
The home we feature in “Timeless Harmony” is another that speaks volumes about its owners’ passions. These Minneapolis empty nesters wanted the feel of a traditional New York apartment in the new, modern, steel, and glass Edgewater Lofts. Not only does the home embody the vintage style the couple loves, it also features a music room to accommodate his piano playing and a spectacular view of Lake Calhoun to satisfy her yearning to overlook water.
And talk about a home designed around its owners’ desires! Check out Tom and Mary Grudnowski’s new mountain retreat near Vail in “Peak Contentment”. With the help of Minneapolis interior designer Billy Beson, the couple created a vacation home that combines luxury and comfort with recreation.
Because our homes speak so clearly about who we are and what we like to do, we care about how they look—and what they’re worth. After 10 straight years of increases, most home prices are declining. How is the market faring in the Twin Cities? In “What’s Your Home Worth Now?”, Star Tribune business reporter Kara McGuire captures a snapshot of the situation.
The news isn’t uniformly grim, but the forecast remains uncertain. Hang onto your hat.
