Some common landscaping mistakes are when people plant things too close together, or too close to buildings; improper drainage; and when the walkway up to the front door doesn’t “flow.”

Landscaping is all about trends. They come and go. Kitchens and fireplaces are very popular now. Water of any kind—even just an overflowing pot—makes a great focal point while adding a soothing sound. Arbors and trellises are also making a comeback.
What is the first step in starting a landscape project?
Every good project starts with a strong design. The design will let you see how whole project flows. After you have a design, you can determine if it should be done in phases or all at once. Just remember that in Minnesota, we only have a seven to eight month window to get your project in the ground, so call early. Winter is a great time to complete your design so that when the weather warms up in the spring, it’s ready to be installed.

One of our clients had a small, quaint property in St. Paul, yet wanted to incorporate multiple “big yard” features. We were able to design and transform her backyard into an intimate outdoor entertaining space, complete with an outdoor kitchen, raised concrete spa, custom concrete swimming pool, fireplace, travertine permeable patio surfaces, and natural fencing (made with plant materials). By using our creativity and specialty products in a small space, we were able to attain the look and feel the homeowner was hoping to achieve.
What are some common landscaping mistakes?
Not blending the landscape with the architecture of the home and the surrounding environment. It all needs to flow. Another common mistake is when homeowners design patios too small for how they want to entertain and for the amount of foot traffic that will be going through that space.
What trends have you been seeing now as far as open air kitchens/outdoor entertaining space?
As far as outdoor entertaining, more and more people are opting for gas fireplaces instead of wood due to the ease of use and city ordinances. There is no mess, no smoke, and they are simple to start any time of the year.
