At what stage of a project is it best to incorporate technology?
Everything we use in today’s world is “connected” to the web. It’s very important to install a very robust network in the home. Networking is the No. 1 item on today’s technology list.
What is the ROI for technology/entertainment in the home, either now or at resale?
I believe that the best return is in making the system(s) easy to operate. Our industry has earned a reputation for installing systems that aren’t user-friendly. That has all changed (at least at Orion). The current attitude is “easy is better.” We practice that every day.
What are some common questions you receive from clients?
How can I control everything with my iPad? The answer? There’s an App for that. We use the Elan “G” system. It can accommodate just about any control from any type of hand-held device.
What, in your opinion, is a “must-have” feature for homeowners?
Getting everything into one manageable place is important. With the Elan “G” system you can do just that. It allows the customer to get started with a system and later expand into other areas like thermostat control, lock control, cameras, etc.
Would you like to add anything else?
Consumers need to do a good job of investigating the technology company they choose. Make sure they have experience. This is a good indication that they know the industry and will be around if you ever need anything in the future.
