When you walk into a room, you notice the little touches that give it a certain feeling and particular style: the furniture, the flooring, the lighting, the artwork, even the window treatments. Together, these elements give a room personality. Rooms, obviously, don’t start out with character. They start out as four boring bare walls. That’s where interior designers come in. Interior designers meet with homeowners, listen to how they live and how they want to live, then approach a room armed with an in-depth understanding of color, sound, light, patterns, furniture, fabrics, paint, fixtures, and art. The result is an otherwise uninspired space transformed into a functional work of art, a space that expresses who the client is, a space with character and personality.

A designer’s ‘best friend’ is…
fabric. It is so essential to our design schemes. Fabric not only provides color, but can also bring texture, pattern, and warmth to a space. The right fabric can really bring a room to life.
An outstanding project:
We worked on a home theater that is second-to-none. In order to add the theater, we had to dig out— by hand—a crawl space under a family room. The design was methodically designed in 1930s Art-Deco with hints of Frank Lloyd Wright details. Attention was paid to hand-carved doors, sumptuous fabrics, lighting, and wood trim.
What was one of your best ‘finds’ from last year?
I found a wonderful three-piece cast-iron fire back at a salvage yard, complete with a scene of Cavalier’s hoisting some “cheer!” I used the center section as part of a backsplash over the range and under a wonderful custom-aged copper hood in a home with a hunting lodge theme. It was the perfect fit.

Industry trends:
Lacquered walls, sustainable products, chevron patterns, and brass accents are all popular now. We are layering a lot of pattern on pattern with luxurious custom finishes such as washed oak, stained bamboo, or reclaimed woods.
Outstanding project:
We designed a master suite project with floor-to-ceiling slab marble walls and an antique rosewood armoire, blending contemporary and traditional into a beautiful custom master bath and bedroom. The design elements were enhanced by the combination of textures, and the gold light fixture accents added a bit of Hollywood glamour for great visual interest.
Every room is…
an opportunity to tell a story about the homeowner’s dreams and personality. This year we traveled to Berlin and Paris to source unique finds for our clients. Along the way, we found design elements that are special to our client’s tastes. One of our favorite finds was a hand-made vintage drum found in an antique shop right here in Hopkins.

When should someone hire an interior designer?
For those projects within your home that you have been thinking about starting but are not sure how or where to begin. An interior designer has the training and experience to plan, execute, and manage your project from start to finish - no matter what the size or scope. In addition, a designer’s expertise and guidance can help prevent costly mistakes. An interior designer is a professional that can be a vital aspect of any project a homeowner is thinking of undertaking.
A good designer has…
the ability to multi-task successfully. As an interior designer you are constantly working on multiple steps in numerous projects at the same time. You need to have a great eye for design, and also the practical skills to make it happen. It is so important to keep track of every detail and know how to work it all together into a thought-out cohesive design solution. Organization is critical, and a good interior designer needs to be able to wear many ‘hats’ at the same time.
Industry trends:
Metal is definitely very popular right now. We’re seeing all metal furniture, accessories, nail-head trim, and pieces combining metal and glass or wood. We are also seeing more whimsical accessories and art that are inspired by nature and animals.
