» Material World

The Techno Textiles: Inner Space to Outer Space exhibit at the Goldstein Museum of Design explores how designers use innovative materials, including soft-to-the-touch carpet made of corn fiber, stain and water-resistant upholstery treated with nanotechnology, and these stunning tensile lights from Studio Lilica. The exhibit runs through July 27. Visit http://goldstein.che.umn.edu for more info.

« Urn Return - CANCELED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE

An antique Japanese urn, once the centerpiece of what is now the Walker Sculpture Gardens, rated a painstaking restoration courtesy of Dean Engelmann and Scott Endres of Tangletown Gardens. Originally a gift to the city of Minneapolis from the Heffelfinger family, the urn was neglected and vandalized for years before Tangletown’s owners took up its cause. The dedication for the refurbished urn and its new surrounding garden near the Lake Harriet bandshell will be on July 26th.

« Sold! Super-Eco Retreat

An über green cabin in Tofte, built by Minneapolis psychoanalyst Medora Woods and designed by architect Sarah Nettleton, sold in late 2007 for $1.4 million. In a world of wannabes, this is the real thing: The cabin has a wind generator, photovoltaics, radiant flooring, framing lumber from the Menominee Forest, and a garage door made with wood recycled from old pickle vats. Edina Realty agent June Ullom pulled off a feat of her own by finding a buyer willing to preserve the 945-square-foot cabin on 5 acres of spruce-studded Lake Superior shoreline.
