What is the definition of luxury?

What is the definition of luxury? The English dictionary offers several possibilities: Expensive high-quality surroundings, and the great comfort that they provide. An item that is desirable but not essential, and often expensive or hard to get. An activity that gives great pleasure, especially one only rarely indulged in.

No matter how you define luxury, I am certain that you will find it on the 8th Annual Luxury Home Tour during the first three weekends of June. This issue features our official Luxury Home Tour program, with information about each of the 17 homes on the tour. As you peruse through the program, you will see that each home has many luxuries for everyone to experience, whatever your idea of luxury may be.

Our custom builders who participate in the tour say that luxury really does mean something different to each of their clients, which is why these homes are called custom homes. The builder listens to the clients’ wants and needs before even beginning to design their new luxury homes. To some, luxury may be imported granites, gourmet kitchens with commercial-grade appliances, and a master bedroom with a fireplace. To others, it may be an amazing master bath with a steam shower and soaking tub, fine fabrics, amazing furnishings, and a swimming pool. But all of these homes share at least one trait: They start with the highest quality of fine craftsmanship that our luxury builders offer.

Visit the homes and talk with the builders about your dream home. I was in Washington, D.C. this past month to meet with legislators about the housing industry. I serve on the board of directors for the National Association of Home Builders through our local Builders Association of the Twin Cities. The chief economist for NAHB, Dave Seiders, expressed his thoughts that the bottom of the housing market downturn is very close. Next will be a period of leveling off, followed by growth. I am convinced that if you are thinking of building a home now or in the near future, you should be talking with your builder very soon.
