Master Gardeners
Gardens Galore
When developing a new skill, why not learn from a master? The Hennepin County Master Gardeners are hosting their annual Learning Garden Tour on Saturday, July 14, consisting of 11 gardens designed and maintained by Master Gardeners who have been certified through the University of Minnesota Extension service. The gardens are located along a convenient cluster in the southwest metro (Minneapolis, Edina, St. Louis Park, and Golden Valley) and the tour is designed to offer inspiration and information on contemporary gardening styles and techniques, including landscaping with native plants and no-mow lawns, creating outdoor rooms, and vegetable growing strategies. Master Gardeners will be on hand to answer questions and provide educational demonstrations. Tickets cost $15 in advance and $20 the day of the event. hennepinmastergardeners.org
Forage Modern Workshop
James Brown and Mike Smith of Brownsmith Restoration established themselves with commercial and residential renovations and period-appropriate additions. (They’re currently at work on the forthcoming Minneapolis Blue Door Pub.) But their new project, Forage Modern Workshop, focuses on furnishing spaces with heirloom pieces. The business launched this spring online—and will soon open an East Lake Street showroom—to help local furniture makers market their work. The idea is to display a desk made in Northfield next to one from, say, Norway, along with a small collection of vintage finds. Among the locally made favorites being featured by Forage Modern Workshop are sleek, Mid-Century-inspired credenzas from Eastvold Furniture and Norsk Valley’s rustic-chic side tables made from tree cross sections. foragemodernworkshop.com
Cooks Cleans Out its Cupboards
Cooks of Crocus Hill cleans house for its annual garage sale, June 8-10. Discounts of up to 80 percent will be offered on clearance and closeout culinary merchandise, plus samples, fixtures, kitchen furniture (including butcher block tables), and gently used school cookware. Though Cooks has locations in Edina and Stillwater, the sale takes place in a tent behind the St. Paul store only. A few general garage sale rules apply: “no holds, no fights, and no returns.” cooksofcrocushill.com
Swedish Institute Expands
The American Swedish Institute is building a modern addition to its 1908 Turnblad Mansion—and still keeping the annual lutefisk feeds intact. The new space, known as The Carl and Leslie Nelson Cultural Center, is intended to enhance the Institute’s ability to preserve and celebrate Nordic culture. The local architecture firm HGA has channeled a sleek Scandinavian-inspired aesthetic for the modern, glassy design, which will contain new galleries as well as a large studio and crafts workshop. The Institute’s June 30th grand opening will be an all-day festival with food and drink, music, and art, including the launch of an exhibition by Swedish trompe-l’oeil tapestry weaver Helena Hermnarck. asimn.org
