To make a new series of delicate glass leaves, Minneapolis glassworker and naturalist Brian Western looked to an unusual material: beer bottles. “I had tried to make leaves before, but I couldn’t get the ‘curve’ right,” he says. Now, he carves straight from the side of beer bottles, solders the designs, and then adds a ball-bearing swivel, so his leaves can dance and twirl in the sunlight. Available for $30–$50 each from the artist, 612-481-9960.
« Minimalist Master
A striking contemporary in Deephaven won kudos this spring from the American Institute of Architects. The home, owned by Kevin Streeter, designed by Duluth architect David Salmela, and built by Streeter & Associates of Wayzata, was named one of the 19 top designs of 2008 and called a “unified statement of sustainable artistry.”
« Sold! Lowry Hill Lookout
This 3,450-square-foot modern home in Lowry Hill sold for $900,000 in late February, down from the $1.195 million asking price, after nearly a year on the market. Designed in 1982 by Minneapolis architects Joseph Buslovich and Mark Mednikov, the three-bedroom house was conceptualized as a kind of organic nest in the trees. Once home to CNN anchor Randi Kaye and her mortgage broker husband, the house’s new owner looks forward to biking around nearby Lake of the Isles. (Sale closed by Steve Havig, Lakes Area Realty.)
