This November, the Mid-America Remodeling & Design Expo helps you find the right resources

There are more than 12,500 licensed building contractors in Minnesota. With numbers that huge, it can be bewildering to figure out who to call about building your deck or remodeling your kitchen. Do you need a designer in addition to a carpenter? Can you go directly to a specialty or trade contractor? (And what is a specialty or trade contractor, anyway?)

It’s easy to get confused. That’s why attending this fall’s Mid-America Remodeling & Design Expo can give you an advantage. It’s your opportunity to interview and evaluate multiple remodeling professionals and receive excellent advice, all in one day, under one roof.

The Mid-America Remodeling & Design Expo will be Saturday and Sunday, November 4 and 5, 2006, at the Minneapolis Convention Center. Produced in partnership with the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), it will feature only home improvement-related exhibitors. Bring your ideas, plans, swatches and other materials to the expo so that you are prepared to discuss your projects with the experts.

Be sure to talk with some of the interior designers if you think you might need assistance picking out tile, countertops, fixtures, windows, or paint colors. An interior designer can show you how to make the best use of higher-end materials, and how to pull your project together and make it look cohesive.

In addition, the expo will feature free seminars on topics ranging from lowering home energy costs to surviving the emotional side of a home remodeling project (for more, see page 160).

11 a.m. What Type Of Contractor Should You Hire? – Bjorn Freudenthal, CAPS, College City Remodeling
•With thousands of licensed building contractors in Minnesota, knowing who to call to get your project started can be challenging. Do you need a designer, a carpenter, or a specialty or trade contractor? Bjorn Freudenthal, CAPS—general manager of the family owned, award winning College City Remodeling, Inc. and president-elect of NARI MN
provides some answers. Freudenthal has led the company to Top 500 status in the nation in 2005 and Remodelor of the Year-Runner up in the Twin Cities in 2006.

12 p.m. Ways to Lower Home Energy Costs – Paul Morin, Center for Energy and Environment
•With gas and utility prices increasing, every homeowner could benefit from tips on how to make his or her home more energy efficient. Learn from energy professionals what the most cost effective methods are to reduce your utility costs. Take the Minnesota Energy Challenge—what can you do to minimize energy consumption in your home?
1 p.m. Bath Remodeling 2006: Trends and Cost-Effective Solutions Lynn Monson, ASID, CKD, CBD, CID, DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen
•Find your dream bath with a wide variety of options from simple makeovers to “Wow!”. Learn the latest trends, technology, styles and innovative solutions. See many options including re-coloring or covering major fixtures to create a new look in less than one week with very little mess. On the other end of the spectrum is full remodeling with the latest in technology and materials for that “wow!” factor. Lynn Monson brings a unique perspective to bath design, combining the experienced eye of an interior designer with the technical training of a kitchen and bath specialist. He has been featured on PBS’ Hometime.
2 p.m. The Home Design House Call, Michael G. Pach, Michael Pach Design
The Home Design House Call is an interactive design session. Using 3D computer technology and his design/build experience, Michael Pach takes your ideas and creatively designs a new space that fits your needs and budget. As your design takes shape in 3D, you’ll see what your new space will look like before any work begins, saving you time and money. Pach has been involved in the residential construction trades for over 30 years as a carpenter, custom woodworker, historic preservationist, remodeling contractor and residential designer. He brings his experience and creativity to the design and planning process.
3 p.m. Counter Point: Pros and Cons of Different Countertop Surfaces, Ron McClintic, Kitchen Tune-Up
•Laminate, solid surface, engineered stone, granite. They all have their place but how do you choose the best material for your new countertop? Ron McClintic reviews the available material, comparing such features as price, durability, cleanability, style and options. He will also examine some of the myths about various countertop materials and take your questions. McClintic is the owner of three Kitchen Tune-Up franchises serving the northwestern Twin Cities. He and his design staff regularly recommend and sell all types of countertops.

4 p.m. AM 1500 KSTP On Stage
5 p.m. Glass in the Kitchen and Bath Parker Chandler, GlasScapes
•Parker Chandler, owner of GlasScapes, Inc., discusses unique applications using glass in the kitchen and bath. He will also give critical advice on the installation and proper care of architectural glass.

1 p.m. How to Survive the Emotional Side of Remodeling – Jerry Roelofs, Roelofs Remodeling & Renovation, Inc.
Remodeling is usually thought about in terms of “What did you do?”, “How long did it take?” and “How much did it cost?” But there is another side to remodeling: the emotional cost. This is a humorous and often-insightful look at how to keep your marriage, your kids and your sanity while your house is in upheaval. Jerry Roelofs has been taking the pulse and the blood pressure of his clients and the remodeling industry for nearly 30 years. He shares his observations in an easy, personal style, rich with humor and disarming humanity.
 
3 p.m. Maximizing Your Design Budget Expert Panel with NARI members
•You want your home improvement project to match your lifestyle, and make the maximum use of your budget. What materials are available? What changes should you discuss if you plan to stay in your home after retirement? How can you keep your home from looking outdated a few years from how? Bring your questions: Experts include Jennifer Murnan, L.R., lead designer at College City Remodeling, who has had her work featured on HGTV’s Before & After and multiple Remodelors Showcases throughout the Twin Cities; and Bjorn Freudenthal, CAPS, the general manager of College City Remodeling, Remodelor of the Year Runner up in the Twin Cities in 2006.
