November/December 2009 Garden Tips
1. Wrap all smooth bark trees to protect from sunscald, frost cracks, and animal damage.
2. Make sure all old and new plants are well watered, especially the evergreens. This has been a dry year and irrigation systems shut down early.
3. Mulch perennial beds. It is best if there is some frost in the ground if you can wait that long.
4. Plant large shade trees.
5. It is not too late to apply fertilizer to the lawn. The results will show in the spring.
6. Make sure your outside water is shut off and your hoses are drained.
7. Give your lawn a good raking to lift away accumulations of debris. Keep leaves raked from the lawn. They should be composted. Alternatively, you can just mow over them, turning them to mulch, which adds important nutrients back to the lawn.
8. Be sure to place your holiday spruce tips in the ground or containers now before the ground freezes and makes it more difficult.
9. Be sure to place all liquid insecticides and fertilizers left from summer in a heated garage or basement for the winter so they do not freeze.
