A phased remodel over time is a technique that is growing in popularity. The homeowners of this 1960s-era Edina home took a phased approach by identifying long-term goals, then designing strategies to perform the work over time, causing less disruption to their lives and their budget. In 2005, they called on the talented team at Plekkenpol Builders, a residential design/build remodeler dedicated solely to remodeling (they don’t build new homes), to help them begin their journey.
Phase 1 included opening interior walls and upgrading the trim to include crown moulding, large paint grade casing and base, and a new stairway balustrade.
During phase II, Plekkenpol carved a laundry and mudroom out of an extra garage stall. This extensive remodel included removing walls and rerouting plumbing and heat ducts to create a space with lockers for the kids, a new laundry area, and extra cabinets for storage. “Many families put a premium on the mudroom, especially living where we do,” says Jim Kuzzy, project manager.
The original kitchen was outfitted in tired-looking wood paneling and bad lighting; it was cramped and inefficient. In 2008, it was time for phase III. A walk-in pantry was added, an archway from the kitchen to the dining room was created, and the kitchen was reconfigured into a beautiful and functional space complete with a wine bar, built-in storage, and center island for all five family members to eat together.
“The success of the kitchen project had a lot to do with space planning,” explains Kuzzy. Plekkenpol was able to creatively transform the kitchen without adding space—allowing the homeowners to allocate those dollars toward interior investments like quality cabinetry, solid surface countertops, an undermount kitchen sink, and energy-efficient windows and appliances.
This fall, Plekkenpol will be working on phase IV featuring a boat stall addition and new windows and exterior to reflect the updated interior.
According to Kuzzy, “This particular project epitomizes who we are, the quality of work we do, and the trust we build with our clientele.”
