After a few minutes with Alan Nugent and Steve Grams, co-owners of Abode in Stockholm, the Wisconsin rivertown, it’s obvious these two former Twin Citians are driven by a singular philosophy. The two entrepreneurs took the advice of famed Arts and Crafts designer William Morris—“Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful”—and ran with it. The result? A home décor/gallery/interior design shop that features natural, handmade, functional home items. Their 2,400-square-foot space showcases the work of local artists such as furniture maker Burt Levy and naturalist painter Christopher Copeland; glass objects from Cohn-Stone Studios and Charlton Glassworks; and much more. “The store evokes a sense of serenity, casual elegance, and the beauty of nature,” Nugent says. Combined with a frequently changing gallery show and a newly released private-label upholstery line, these two small-town transplants are making it big.
