At Cold Spring Granite’s two metro-area showrooms, selecting stone is much like browsing among fine works of art. Here, the artist is Mother Earth, the paintbrush eons of geologic forces.
Cold Spring Granite is a stone distributor that supplies slabs of granite, limestone, travertine, marble, onyx, slate and soapstone to stone fabricators through two selection centers located in the Twin Cities metro area, says Christine Hazen, Cold Spring Granite selection center manager.
“Builders and fabricators send their customers to the selection centers to hand-select the stone of their choice for their home projects,” Hazen says. “Even though we don’t sell directly to the consumer, we are there to facilitate their selection experience as needed.”
Cold Spring Granite’s selection centers are comprised of two components: a showroom and a “stone gallery.” The showroom offers examples of stone installations in kitchen, bath, office and family room vignettes. Large stone slab samples are arranged in pull-out-drawer displays to give customers a better look at a particular type of stone. Paint, fabric, and wood cabinet samples are available to match the stone color to existing home décor.
Beyond the showroom is the stone gallery. This well-lit, heated and well-organized space contains the showroom’s wide selection of stone slabs from around the world. Among as many as 180 different colors, you’ll find stones from the far reaches of India and Brazil to local slabs quarried in Minnesota. New slabs arrive daily.
The advantage of the stone gallery is that it offers not a sample, but the actual slab of the stone that will be cut and installed in a customer’s home. There’s no guessing here.
“It eliminates surprise and helps you visualize what your product is going to be about,” Hazen says. “A lot of homeowners are used to engineered stone where everything is very consistent throughout. Not so with natural stone, where movement and color can vary from subtle to extreme all within the same slab.”
“With green building becoming more popular, a lot of people are choosing to use regional or local material in their homes,” says Sarah Dodd, Cold Spring Granite marketing specialist. “We have a diverse color palette that they can choose from if they would like a regional material.”
Once a slab is selected, Cold Spring Granite will hold it for up to 30 days free of charge before it is purchased by and shipped to the fabricator of the homeowner’s choice.
Showroom browsing is welcome, but appointments are recommended to ensure that a selection specialist will be available to answer your questions.
“Our whole goal…is to be the ultimate natural stone selection experience,” Hazen says. “Some people don’t realize that they can customize their home the way they exactly see it. Instead of just choosing from a small sample, they can choose from the whole slab they want. It’s a great experience.”
