Have a Seat

In the modern gallery space behind its spa and salon, Fivetwosix is mounting the first exhibit of artisan-made furniture in its short existence. On display will be tactile tables and finely crafted chairs from four of Minnesota’s preeminent furniture designers: Thomas Oliphant, Scott McGlasson, George Mahoney, and Robert Ewert. Gallery director Stephen Trevino, also an interior designer, aimed for an eclectic mix with the salon’s permanent collection of antique and modern pieces. The exhibit opens September 7 with a reception featuring live jazz and refreshments and runs through September 30.

Art Up North

Minnesota’s North Shore art community is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its Crossing Borders Studio Tour by adding nine local guest artists to the usual 14 who open their studios along the 140-mile route from Duluth up Highway 61 to Thunder Bay in Canada. As always, the tour aims to educate visitors about what the artists do in a hospitable atmosphere, says Fritz Lehmberg of Early Snows Pottery on Highway 61 just south of Thunder Bay, one of the tour’s pioneers. Tour goers will find everything from kitchen-ready pottery to Asian-inspired coats to hand-cut glass sculptures, all surrounded by the blazing colors of the North Shore in autumn. Studios will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. from September 29 through October 8. Call 1-800-388-8698 or go to www.crossingbordersstudiotour.com for more information.
