September 2006 Landscape Calendar
Fall Garden Tips
• Fall is for planting! Take advantage of those great fall sales at local garden centers on perennials, trees and shrubs. These plants will establish well as long as they are planted six weeks before a hard frost. Once the ground freezes, apply a heavy layer of mulch to protect them over the winter, especially the first year they are planted.
• Never got around to putting in that new patio or walkway this summer? It’s not too late! September’s mild weekends are perfect for landscaping; the cooler temperatures make working on these projects more comfortable. If “doing it yourself” is not an option, there are excellent landscape design services that can help you create a backyard paradise.
• Trees and shrubs still need a regular watering to keep the top 6” of soil moist. This is especially critical the first five years after the tree or shrub is planted. Water until the ground freezes!
• Apply your first fall application of lawn fertilizer in mid-September and follow with another application about six weeks later. Use a fertilizer that’s low in nitrogen and high in potassium.
• Snip off any new flowers that form on your tomato plants so that any existing tomatoes will receive the energy they need to develop. Stop deadheading roses after the final wave of fall blooms later this month. Rose hips will form, signaling the plant to prepare for winter.
• Perennials that bloom early in the season, like bleeding hearts, euphorbia and forget-me-nots, can be moved in September.
• When night temperatures fall to 50oF or below, most tropical plants should be moved indoors. A few exceptions: Christmas and Easter cacti, azaleas, ivy and true cacti. They can remain outdoors as long as night temps stay above 35oF.
• This is the start of the 8-10 week apple picking season. Early apples don’t store well, so eat them up, cook with them and enjoy them now. FYI: If your trees haven’t produced many apples, they may have been affected by the use of fertilizer containing nitrogen. Trees in heavily fertilized lawns tend to have lots of foliage but not many apples.

Tour a renovated 109-year-old farmhouse in Excelsior

When it was last sold in 2004, the house at 182 Third St. was considered a teardown. Instead, it was restored. Built in 1897, the two-story Victorian Queen Anne-type structure was formerly owned by a man who reputedly inspired the Rolling Stones hit song “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.” During “Design in the Community: IFDA Presents Historic Excelsior,” October 6–8, step inside and see the renovation that has transformed the home’s interior into a beautiful classic.
