September 2009 Garden Tips

1. Don’t dead head perennials you want visable for winter interest. These include Rudbeckia, Echinacea, Astilbe, Liatris, Sedum, and any others that have sturdy stems that may enhance your winter landscape.

2. Stop fertilizing gardens with shrubs and perennials. Do keep up on watering in drought, however.

3. Begin shopping for the best selection of flowering bulbs this month. Don’t plant until October.

4. Keep an eye on the weather and plan to cover or bring in anything that will be affected by frost.

5. Sow your last crop of cool season veggies like lettuce, cabbage and spinach. Harvest one more time from your Rhubarb plant before frost.

6. Fall is a great time to plant perennials, trees and shrubs. It is also a great time to dig and divide plants. This is the best time to dig and divide Iris’ and Peonies.

7. You can install a new garden at this time. The ground is usually drier than Spring and you can add your Perennials and bulbs at the same time. Many garden centers now offer deals on their plants at this time of year.
